Health First Tri

Today several Team Hendryx athletes competed in the Health First Tri. It was very hot and if you're here in FLA you know what I mean! 95 degrees is just a little too toasty for my liking. Despite the heat Bill W. placed 1st AG, Sean 1st Master Overall and Kevin J. 2nd AG . Mike R had a good day, but they did not have the results up yet for him, so I can't say how he placed. Mike Russo unfortunately not only flatted, but sliced his tire and had to wait an hour for help. He continued on to finish the race. Great work everyone! BTW, congrats to another Team Hendryx athlete, Dan who qualified for the Boston Marathon today at Chicago. Way to go everyone!

5430 Triathlon

The race is called "5430" because that is the elevation of Boulder,CO where this race took place. Sean and Team Hendryx client Kevin Johnson competed. Being flatlanders from FL , the race was already tough. Sean had a good day finishing 13th in his age group. Kevin J. had a good day as well. The weather was fabulous and as always , the venue gorgeous!.
day as well.
Any one interested in this race for next summer, you will find it list as one of the 70.3 race as it was just bought out by the Ironman corporation.

James Peak ,CO hike

Hi All,
So this was my workout Sunday, a 10 mile hike up to James Peak at 13,000 ft. elevation. Leslie my sister, Betty her dog, myself and Dixie (our dog) had a great day . Dixie got to swim in a beautiful glacial lake. It was very windy at the top as you can see in the above photo.

Mt. Audubon

Today I hiked up Mt.Audubon with Leslie and her friends, elevation 13,300 ft. She is training for Pikes Peak Marathon which is in August. Leslie and her friend Andy jogged up and I tried to jog where I could and power walk the other parts. I went up a little too fast and got a massive headache and very dizzy from the altitude change. This pic is the top and you can see the weather was starting to get a little iffy so we couldn't hangout long. When you're above tree line and there's a chance of lightening, it best to get down asap. Near the bottom as we headed down the storm rolled in and there was thunder all around. I stated running to get down faster since I had a hiking pole that would be a great lightening rod. Great day ,great workout. I did wonder about the man we saw starting up the mt. with a big metal baby carrier on his back and a baby in it. People do some "funny" things.

FL to CO

Sean and I are doing our annual trip for the summer to Boulder where my family lives. We look forward to our trip each year. The only part we don't enjoy is the very long drive. We usually make it a 2 day trip to get there. This will be Dixie's first trip to CO. I think she'll be fine. Can't wait to get in some dry, cool air.

Sean will be racing the 5430 in Boulder. This pic is of Sean at the local "stroke and stride" training race whiich uses the same venue as the 5430 longcourse race.

KINESIOTAPING

See full size image

Recognize any of these athletes ? Are you wondering why they have tape on them and how it works ? This is Kinesiotaping and it is a special type of tape made to be flexible like skin. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist currently taking classes in Kinesiotaping. I have one class left , which I will taking this Saturday,KTA Level Three. I'll then take the KT exam, hopefully pass and become certified in this . Currently, I have completed KTA Level One and Two. I have been taping for my Achilles tendinitis and plantar fascitis, and I can tell you the tape really works in relieving inflammation and suporrting the muscles and tendons. When KT is used in conjunction with massage, stretching and RICE, athletes can see great improvement in injuries.
KT works to lift the layer of fascia and promote circulation and therefore decrease inflammation. If you don't know what fascia is, think of your body as being many layers like and onion. When these layer get "stuck" and are inflamed it is difficult for the tissue to move and for good circualtion to occur to decrease inflammation. The people that are certified in Kinesiotaping must understand the muscle, tendon and how the body works. Only certain professions are eligible to take the courses and the exam to be certified in KT. For example : LMT, PT , Dr., DC , and AT's.
Remember the last Olympics and all that pink and blue tape?? That was kinesiotape.

PAL has Great Race @ IronKids St.Pete

Team Hendryx is coaching the Lake County Sheriff's Dept. Police Activities League for Triathlon. Today 12 PAL athletes competed in the 2009 IronKids Tri in St. Petersburg FL. We are proud to say the kids had a great time and some even placed in the top 5 qualifying for the IronKids National Championship in Arizona ! I tried to use my new digital Camera Sean gave me for Xmas, but I'm still an amateur, as you'll see if you watch this video.
The day was overcast which made for nice race conditions for the kids. It was nice to see kids participating and having fun . A big thank you to Deputy Brown and Coach Lou for organizing the entire trip . The amount of time you both have put into PAL is surely appreciated by all who participate in this unique opportunity for the kids of Lake County!!
Our Anniversary is today , so we postponed celebrating so we could be at the race . We will celebrate our 6th anniversary this week in St. Augustine at the St. George Inn .

Gulf Coast Tri

What a hot day ! The athletes really struggled . No clouds and extreme heat. I wasn't competing and I was glad when Sean finished so we could get out of the sun.
The race was a success and we were able to visit with some friends we have seen in a while .

Congrats to Kevin J. for a 10 th place in the 50-54 age group and to Mike Russo for a successful finish. Top pic is Kevin finishing strong.

in the lower pic :Sean and Peter enjoying the shade and food after the race. Peter K. was 4th overall pro and Sean 10th in his age group.

swim ,run, Harmoni and mimosa's

We started the day with an open water swim in Lake Mary. Thanks to Elliot and his Mom for letting us swim there and for kayaking for the swimmers. I of course did not swim, although it sure was tempting. The water was glass and the temperature perfect.
After we ran 6 with the Lake Buena Vista Running Club in College Park from Harmoni restaurant. met at the restaurant for breakfast. Food was awsome and so were the mimosa's they made for the group. Not a bad training day!

The Angry Easter Bunny

Happy Easter Y'all ! ,
from Dixie

"why am I wearing stupid pink ears? the things I do for Rene' and Sean"

Sat in my crate while Rene' rode 45 .Released from prison ,then Rene' and I ran 2 miles together.

Monday, March 30, 2009

Yesterday Sean and I rode 40 miles in some really strong wind. I'm glad he's 6'3" . He makes a great wind blocker. I felt like I had been doing squats for 2 hours by the time we finished. It seemed we couldn't get a break. We briefly had a tail wind and were easily cruising 28 mph ., that's how strong the wind was.

Ran 5 today and we're going to ride 25 this p.m.

Saturday was fun , we spent the a.m. working with the Lake Co. PAL for kids . The kids are training for either a Triathlon or a cycling race. They had a lot of fun doing a transition practice as they raced their friend to see who could transition the fastest. There was a lot of laughing going on which is the whole point of being active...having fun!

USAC and new running partner Dixie

I finally got the USAC coach test mailed in. There were several stops and starts. Now I'm officially a level 3 coach. Now I'm the boss of you and I know everything. ( just kidding!).

Rode 35 ran 3 with my new training partner ,Dixie. Sean, Bill ,Steve, Kevin and myself did intervals off Cherry Lake Rd. Good work out. The course had rollers and it was verrry windy.

Everybody has spring training fever. Saw lots of cyclists and triathletes today. We then topped our day off with a tasty grilled chicken sandwich at the Tiki Hut.

Old School

So I haven't been on here for a while. I've been really busy and had a series of "unfortunate events" occur in the last few weeks. I'm due for some good news.
Anyway, here are some old school cycling photos from the Keystone Open 1980. YIKES!! Am I getting old or what. A friend of mine found these and forwarded them to me on Facebook. It's amazing how many friends from the past you can find on there.
I didn't steal the shirt or make my own out of someone's front porch Ol' Glory. It's really mine and that's really me. Kinda cool, huh?! See my old ALAN aluminum gold bicycle ? So light..maybe 30 lbs....give or take a few. Those were the days :-)

Running this weekend

Team Hendryx is holding practice at Blue Jacket Park, Baldwin Park neighborhood. Wish I could run with you all, my ankles are still recovering from my Wekiwa State Park trail run. Ankles are still sore, but the swelling is way down. Maybe I'll be running a little in the next couple weeks. The good news is I can ride again, so now I won't go cuckoo for cocoa puffs crazy insane just lifting weights.

note to self: remember ipod so i won't be subjected to gym muzak

Rocky Raccoon cont...

The RR 50/100 miler was an interesting experience. It takes a lot of mental fortitude to plan on running all day and all night. I couldn't get out and run the course since I have 2 sprained ankles.I saw how I did not prepare correctly for the day. People had tents ,chairs, blankets, BBQ's etc. I just showed up and sat on the ground. Sean looked good the 1st lap. After waiting close to 3 hours for him to complete the 2nd lap, I knew he was in trouble. There were a lot of people planning on walking the entire 50 miles...yikes!!! I knew he didn't want to walk the last 16 so we called it a day. There's only so much you can do after your body starts to cramp everywhere . Forcing yourself to go on in pain for hours is just going to cause future issues.
The park was nice and the runners really friendly. There seems to be a lot of camaraderie at these ultras which is pretty cool.

Rocky News...coming soon

We will be on our way back home in a few hours. I will post pics soon of the race. Sean is working on the race report. He'll be posting soon. Check back soon for my observations of the race.
Note to self: don't do any 50 gazillion milers unless I have lost my mind.

Rocky Raccoon 50 miler

We are here in TX and getting ready to head to Huntsville State Park for packet pick-up. The weather is a nice 70 degrees, slightly windy and some gray clouds. I'm going text news of how Sean is doing tomorrow. Sean has done the training and is ready to go experience the unknown of running 50 miles. I'm optimistic he will prevail and finish.
I can't carry him, so I hope he can walk after at least to the car ! No matter what happens, this will be a great experience for coach Sean and Team Hendryx. Check out the race website to see pictures of trail conditions. We hear it may be torn up from mtn. bike usage. We'll see. Stay tuned :-)

MABEL

This is Mabel, the best dog in the world. She was my furry protector, companion and joy of my day. She was tenacious , sweet and lovable. She loved everyone she met and always was happy to see Sean and I everyday, even if she didn't feel well. She greeted us with her big wagging tail that could take out anything within its range. She will be missed by us forever. I am grateful to have had her for 15 great years.

USA Cycling coach certification

Today I have been taking my USA Cycling level 3 coach test. I'm just about finished with most of the exam. Some of it is a review info for me from my anatomy/physiology/biology classes . I hope to finish the test in the next week or so.

While I take the exam I'm icing my Achilles and ankles. I hope to be back to training in the next couple days.

I like to move it

Today happens to be one of the coldest days ever in Central FLA. Yes, you may laugh at that, but it is a damp cold. I thought zero degrees in CO xc skiing with sunshine felt better since it was dry.

Okay, so enough whining, time to figure out if I can get make it to Duathlon Nats. this year . I have a tendency to not take my racing too seriously since I had enough of that from my cycling race days when there was pressure to perform in very serious pro races. Just wanna have fun and enjoy, stay fit and all that good stuff. Sometimes a touch of ultra competitiveness comes out even as an aging athlete and I don't want to fail. Repeat after me: this is for fun, this is for fun .

I'll be putting in the mileage starting today on the bike.

In other news Sean gave me a cool camera for my B-day. I'm gonna try and post new pics .

Disney Half Marathon

This weekend I had the privilege to help coach the Team Burnham "Running for Discovery" crew at the Disney Half Marathon. These guys are raising money to help scientists find cures for all kinds of awful diseases. I would like to congratulate all half and full marathon finishers!

For many of the athletes, it was their first half or marathon . I was inspired by the young lady that I walked with for the last 4 miles. This wonderful person went from being a couch potato to walking 13.1 miles.

Sometimes we forget what is important when racing . The most important thing to me is not the race but the journey we take to complete our goals.

Be tenacious !
